Core Web Vitals Explained for Business Owners

April 2026 5 min read

Google uses page experience signals to rank websites. Here is what Core Web Vitals actually measure, why they matter for your business, and what it takes to improve them.

Google uses page experience signals — including a set of metrics called Core Web Vitals — as ranking factors. Understanding what these measure, and why they matter beyond SEO, helps you make better decisions about where to invest in your website.

The Three Metrics

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) measures how quickly the main content of a page loads. Specifically, it measures the time from when a user navigates to a page to when the largest visible element — usually an image or a block of text — finishes rendering. A good LCP is under 2.5 seconds.

Interaction to Next Paint (INP) measures how responsive a page is to user interactions. When a visitor clicks a button or fills in a form field, INP measures the delay before the page visibly responds. Users notice delays above 200 milliseconds.

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) measures visual stability — how much the page layout shifts unexpectedly while loading. A page that jumps around as images and ads load has a high CLS score. This is the metric responsible for the phenomenon of clicking a link just as the page shifts and hitting something entirely different.

Why This Matters Beyond Rankings

Poor Core Web Vitals scores correlate with higher bounce rates and lower conversion rates. A slow page loses visitors before they engage with your content. A visually unstable page frustrates visitors who are trying to interact with it.

For organizations running paid traffic to their website, page experience directly affects conversion rates — which directly affects the return on every advertising dollar spent.

What to Do First

Measure before you invest. Google Search Console provides free Core Web Vitals data for any site that has been verified. PageSpeed Insights gives a per-page breakdown with specific recommendations. Start by understanding where you actually stand before commissioning any work.
